At Mondi Lodge we strive to run a sustainable business and become a certified ecolodge.

Environmental conservation:

  • We did not chop a single tree during construction, we simply moved them to another spot on our property
  • We work mostly with local flora and water them with groundwater and re-used septic tank water
  • We run largely on solar energy
  • Showering water is heated by solar panels
  • Most lights contain energy-saving LED bulbs
  • The palapas are isolated and built on the wind
  • We work with eco-labeled cleaning products and supply organic, all-natural toiletries to our guests
  • We have a Magnapool, which doesn't require usage of chlorine, saves water because of a reduced need for backwashing, has a positive effect on skin hydration, skin barrier function and skin roughness and inflammation and is also safely suitable for irrigation.
  • We started growing fruit and vegetables and aim to be more self-sufficient in the future
  • We keep chickens for organic eggs (upon availability)
  • We serve organic, fair-trade coffee to our guests

Recycling and waste management:

  • We made as much furniture and decoration as possible with recycled pallet wood, driftwood and trash collected at Clean-ups
  • We recycle plastic bottles, soda cans, glass and send used batteries to the Netherlands were they get properly taken care of
  • We make use of bio-degradable garbage bags
  • We make use of recycled napkins
  • We work with an à la carte menu to avoid wasting food. Leftovers go to the animals we keep
  • Printing paper is re-used as writing paper and old paper and cardboard are brought to the recycle station
  • We do not work with printed flyers. We have a digital guest directory where guests can find all info on Mondi Lodge and Curaçao
  • Bacon grease and vegetable oils are being collected and recycled into bio fuel.

Social and communal commitment:

  • We inform our guests about sustainability and their part in being sustainable. Besides the information they get at check-in and what’s mentioned in our digital guest directory, we aim to increase their consciousness by trying to talk about the subject with them. We also involve them in the process by asking them to recycle or bring home some batteries for us to properly dispose
  • We work with local people
  • We buy our toiletries at local, family-run business Integra Natural, which was founded by ten year old Tatiana
  • We buy our sustainable cleaning products at Cleanful.
  • We are a member of Greenforce Curaçao, who also take care of our recycled bottles and cans. To involve the community, we send letters to our neighbors and encourage them to make use of our recycle station
  • We work with local car rental Prins, instead of the big players at the airport
  • The commission we make on tours, is donated to a local charity
  • We organize clean-ups with our workers and other volunteers when we have spare time
  • We provide our guests with the essentials for a small clean-up (garbage bags and dirt picks) and reward them with a gift if they post the results online and tag us
