This is the view on every Curaçao postcard, and it is even better in person. The Handelskade, or trading quay, is the row of brightly painted merchant houses along the water in Punda, the oldest part of Willemstad. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it is only about ten minutes’ drive from the lodge.
Walk the quay, then cross the Queen Emma Bridge to Otrobanda on the other side of Sint Anna Bay. Built in 1888, it is a floating pontoon bridge for people on foot, and locals call it the Swinging Old Lady. Every so often it swings open to let ships through the harbour, and you can stand and watch the whole bridge drift aside.
Punda and Otrobanda are made for wandering. Cobbled lanes, small shops and shady squares sit behind the waterfront, and the colours change with the light through the day. Early morning is cool and quiet, while late afternoon brings a golden glow and plenty of places to sit with a cold drink and watch the boats.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring a hat. When you’re hungry, Plasa Bieu is a short walk away for a proper local lunch.
