Hiking Near Sint Michiel: Sint Michielsberg, the Salinas and Malpais

The Sint Michielsberg hill seen through dry forest under a blue sky, Curaçao

If you like to start the day on foot, Sint Michiel is a very good place to be. Some of the best short hikes on Curaçao begin within a couple of kilometres of Mondi Lodge, and you can be back at the pool before the heat of the day.

Sint Michielsberg summit

This is the classic. The trail starts at Boka Sami beach, runs along the saliñas and climbs the Sint Michielsberg. The route is only about 2 km to the top, but it is rocky, so it counts as moderate. From the summit you look down over the fishing village, the salt flats and the sea. Allow around an hour and a half for the full loop at an easy pace.

The saliña walk

For something gentler, follow the easy path of around 4 km along the saliñas. These shallow salt flats are one of the best places on the island to see flamingos. Walk quietly, keep your distance and bring binoculars if you have them.

Boka Sami cliff path

This path of about 3 km follows the coast with the sea on one side and dry forest on the other. It’s a moderate walk with plenty of places to stop and look out over the water. There is also a trail of around 2 km that links Boka Sami with Vaersenbaai, home to Kokomo Beach.

Malpais

Just north of Sint Michiel Bay lies Malpais, a large former plantation now protected as a conservation area, with well-signed trails. Its easy 3 km route is the one for deer spotting. Curaçao’s white-tailed deer are shy, so walk early, stay quiet and scan the edges of the clearings.

Hiking tips for Curaçao

  • Go early. The sun is strong by mid-morning. Aim to be walking soon after sunrise.
  • Carry more water than you think you need, plus a hat and sun protection.
  • Wear proper shoes. Trails are rocky and can be muddy after rain.
  • Watch out for manchineel trees. Don’t touch them or eat their small green fruit, as they are poisonous.
  • Leave no trace. Take everything home with you.
