One of the questions we’re asked most is when to come. The honest answer is that Curaçao is a year-round island. It is warm every month, it sits in the far south of the Caribbean, and the trade winds keep things comfortable. Still, each part of the year has its own character, so here’s how it works from our corner of Sint Michiel.
The dry, breezy months
For much of the year, Curaçao is sunny and dry, with a steady breeze from the east. This is classic island weather: blue skies, calm water on the south coast around Boka Sami and bright, clear days for snorkelling. The landscape can look dry and golden, with the cactus and hardy trees standing out against the sky.
The short rainy season
Towards the end of the year, roughly from October into the new year, the island sees more rain. It usually comes as short, heavy showers rather than long grey days, and the sun is often back out within the hour. The garden at Mondi Lodge loves it: the trees turn green, flowers appear and the birdlife gets even busier.
If a shower does roll in, it’s a good excuse for an underground adventure at the Hato Caves, a lazy afternoon on your porch or a long lunch in Willemstad.
Out of the main hurricane belt
Curaçao lies south of the main Caribbean hurricane belt, so serious storms are rare here. That makes the island a relaxed choice for travel through the late summer and autumn, when some other destinations are riskier.
Festivals and busy times
Carnival season, in the weeks before Lent, fills Willemstad with music, colour and parades. Holidays such as Christmas, Easter and European school breaks are the busiest times on the island, so book early if you want to travel then.
Our tip
Choose your dates around what you want to do, not the weather. If you’re keen on hiking, the cooler early mornings make every month good. If you want the greenest garden and the quietest beaches, the shoulder months either side of the rainy season are lovely.
Whenever you come, the pool is chlorine-free, the hammocks are waiting and the flamingos are usually at home on the saliñas.
