Inside Our Palapas: Six Wooden Hideaways in a Curaçao Garden

A turquoise wooden palapa among the trees in the garden at Mondi Lodge, Curaçao

At Mondi Lodge there are no corridors, no lifts and no identical rooms. Instead there are six colourful wooden palapas, each built on poles in a quiet tropical garden in Sint Michiel, Curaçao. Each one has its own character, and guests often come back to stay in their favourite.

What is a palapa?

Our palapas are open-sided wooden cabins with a thatched roof made of dried palm leaves. The living space opens onto the garden, so you hear birdsong in the morning and feel the breeze all day. The bedrooms are enclosed and air-conditioned, so you sleep cool and comfortable at night.

Every palapa has a small, handy kitchenette, wifi and daily housekeeping, and organic toiletries are provided.

Meet the palapas

  • Ara, Tortuga and Mariachi: three one-bedroom palapas, ideal for couples or a small family. Mariachi sleeps up to three.
  • Flamingo: a spacious two-bedroom palapa with two bathrooms, sleeping up to four.
  • Kunuku: a two-bedroom palapa for up to four guests, and wheelchair accessible, with an adapted toilet and sink and a lovely roll-in outdoor shower.
  • Yuana: our intimate one-bedroom treehouse for two, the most romantic spot at the lodge.

Around the garden

Step outside and the garden is yours to share. There’s a chlorine-free Magnapool, which is gentle on your skin, an outdoor kitchen with barbecue facilities that you can use any time, beach chairs to take to the bay and a tennis court. The grounds are gated, with parking included.

You won’t be alone out there. Iguanas and tree lizards sun themselves along the paths, hummingbirds and parakeets visit the flowering trees and now and then a flamingo drops by.

Built with care

Not one tree was cut down to build the lodge; they were moved to other spots on the property instead. Much of the furniture and decor is made from pallet wood, driftwood and finds from beach clean-ups, so every palapa has little details worth noticing.

Simple, honest pricing

Rates include tax, cleaning, wifi, electricity and water, so there are no surprise extras apart from anything you take from the minibar.
