“Eco-friendly” gets used a lot in travel. At Mondi Lodge in Sint Michiel, Curaçao, it simply describes how we run the place every day. We’re a family-owned lodge working towards becoming a certified ecolodge, and these are the choices behind your stay.
Energy and water
- The lodge runs largely on solar energy, and solar panels heat your shower water.
- Most lights use energy-saving LED bulbs.
- The palapas are built to catch the wind, which helps keep them cool.
- We water the garden, mostly local plants, with groundwater and re-used water from the septic tank.
A pool without chlorine
Our Magnapool cleans the water without chlorine. It needs less backwashing, so it saves water, and it is kinder to your skin. It’s one of the things guests notice first.
Land and wildlife
We didn’t cut down a single tree during construction; they were moved to other spots on the property. The result is a garden that feels like it has always been here, full of iguanas, lizards, hummingbirds and parakeets.
Less waste
- As much furniture and decoration as possible is made from recycled pallet wood, driftwood and rubbish collected at clean-ups.
- We recycle plastic bottles, cans and glass through Greenforce Curaçao, and send used batteries to the Netherlands to be processed properly.
- We use biodegradable bin bags, re-use printing paper and take old paper and cardboard to the recycling station.
- There are no printed flyers. Everything you need is in our digital guest directory.
Kind products
We clean with eco-labelled products from Cleanful and provide organic, all-natural toiletries bought from local businesses. We serve organic, fair-trade coffee, and when our chickens oblige, organic eggs from the lodge’s own hens.
People and community
- We work with local people and local suppliers.
- We recommend the local car hire company Prins rather than the big players at the airport.
- The commission we earn on tours goes to a local charity.
- We organise beach clean-ups with our team and volunteers, and we invite our neighbours to use our recycling station.
How you can join in
At check-in we’ll show you how to recycle at the lodge. If you’re heading to the beach, ask for our small clean-up kit with bags and litter pickers. Post your results online and tag us, and we’ll thank you with a gift.
Staying with us is a small, practical way to travel more lightly.
